Stephen Ozwald D'souza, CMD, Kalamazoo Group
Stephen aka Steve was Print Summit's first face when the event rolled out in 2005. We are very happy to get his attention and time, once again, especially for you. Steve will address the Print Summit audience on the concept of “Believe” that resonates with the event's principal theme
Steve's story is truly a testament to character and value and that grit determination which Mumbai infuses in all of us. His first job was that of a Filing Clerk at the age of 16 in Dcruz Diagnostic. Went on to join TechNova at the age of 17 as Junior Trainee Sales Executive where he met his Guru for life - Pranav Parikh. Steve made his first pre-sensitised plate demo at Comart under the watchful eyes of Burjor Poonawala. The demo, says Steve, was pretty messed up. After 13 years at TechNova and rising to the level of Head of Digital Division, Steve moved out. He still considers himself to be part of team TechNova, even today.
In May 2001 Steve immigrated to New Zealand. He went to work for Kalamazoo as Account Manager. At the time the company had annual revenue of INR 8 crores. He was promoted as Sales Manager in 2002 and then made General Manager in 2004 by which time the firm's revenue had peaked to INR 15 crores. Steve and his wife Odelia mortgaged everything they had and took over the loss making Kalamazoo in September 2004. And a whole new story begins.
In the last ten years, Steve's group has acquired 14 different companies all of which had one thing in common - they were all making losses and going into liquidation. Today, the Kalamazoo group is the largest private family owned business in NZ within the printing industry. The group's revenue is in excess of INR 2,600 crores with Print revenue being in excess of INR 325 crores.
Steve and Odelia firmly believe that their journey is about changing lives and making this world a better place. Steve intends exiting active business and getting full time into sharing all the three T's he has been blessed with. To quote Steve: “God is good”.
